The Ritt Kellogg Fund supports student expeditions through a generous endowment made by the Kellogg Family, in memory of their son Peter Rittenhouse Kellogg Jr. (Colorado College '90).

The Ritt Kellogg Fund is operated by the Ritt Kellogg Fund Advisory Committee, which includes a collection of experienced mountaineers, outdoorsmen and women, academics, outdoor educators and accomplished managers from the private and non-profit sectors. The Advisory Committee includes Ritt's family members, friends as well as past Ritt Fund recipients.



BIOS

Colby Coombs
After surviving the tragic accident that claimed Ritt Kellogg in 1992, Colby Coombs founded the Ritt Kellogg Fund in 1993 in cooperation with the Kellogg family and Ritt’s dear friends. Colby’s love for climbing and wilderness places led him to instruct courses for NOLS starting at age 19. He guided his first McKinley climb in 1993 for Alaska-Denali Guiding. Colby founded the Alaska Mountaineering School in 1996. Colby is also on the board of the American Mountain Guides Association. He is author of Denali: A Climber's Guide and Alaska: A Climber's Guide, both published by the Mountaineers Press. He lives in Talkeetna, Alaska with his wife Caitlin Palmer.



Caitlin Palmer
Caitlin Palmer has been a Ritt Kellogg Fund Advisory Committee member since its inception. Caitlin has taught for a number of wilderness programs, universities, and guiding companies. Caitlin is a director and instructor for Alaska Mountaineering School, which she co-founded. She first summitted Denali on the 1994 Women's Breast Cancer Expedition. Caitlin's second love is pottery and gardening. She lives in Talkeetna, Alaska with her husband Colby Coombs.


Kenneth W. Sims
Ken was a friend and climbing partner of Ritt Kellogg. He is former President of the Ritt Kellogg Fund Advisory Committee and now serves on the safety and program committees. As an associate Research Scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Dr. Ken Sims uses isotopic and chemical tracers to study geologic processes in the earth and other planetary bodies. Dr. Sims earned his BA in Geology from Colorado College, his MSc from the Institute of Meteoritics at the University of New Mexico; and his PhD in Geochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. Ken's field experience ranges from ocean floor geology, using submersibles and remote sensing techniques to geological studies of active volcanoes at high altitudes in difficult, technical terrain. Academic awards include: the Estwing Outstanding Senior Award at Colorado College, an Outstanding Student Instructor Award from the UC, Berkeley, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Postdoctoral Scholar Fellowship, a CNRS Fellowship from France, and two Mellon Awards for innovative exploratory research.

In addition to his academic career, Ken has been a mountain guide and climbing instructor for over twenty-five years and has extensive experience in technical, high altitude and cold weather mountaineering. Ken has spent eight seasons guiding for scientific parties in Antarctica and has successfully guided Mt. McKinley (20,320 feet), and several 5,000 and 6,000 meter peaks in the Andes of Peru. Ken has also instructed Leadership Training Programs for Outward Bound; and directed wilderness programs for adjudicated youth and other special populations through the Santa Fe Mountain Center. Some of Ken's significant climbing accomplishments include: an ascent of South Face of Nevado Chacraraju (6112 meters); the first ascent of the West Face (V, 5.10) of Nevado Wamsharaju (5434 meters); solo ascents of the Shield on Nevado Huascaran Sur (6768 meters) and the SW face of Nevado Artesonraju (6025 meters); three El Capitan Routes, including an early ascent of the Pacific Ocean Wall (VI, 5.10 A5); a winter ascent of the Diamond of Longs Peak (14,100 ft); a six hour, almost all free ascent of the NW Face of Half-dome (VI, 5.11+, A.0); and several notable first ascents including the first free ascent of the "Air Voyage" (V 5.12) in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, CO.

Dr Sims has also demonstrated a strong commitment to public service related to youth mentoring, and the preservation/restoration of wilderness. Ken has served two terms on the board of Big Brothers and Big Sisters and currently serves on the board of directors of the Rocky Mountain Field Institute and the Ritt Kellogg Fund at Colorado College.



Mary Bevington
Mary Bevington, RKF Program Manager, has been involved with the Ritt Kellogg Fund since its origin. While growing up in Atlanta, Mary played team sports and studied theatre arts. After attaining a BA in English from Colorado College in 1990, Mary became an outdoor educator. During her tenure, she worked for Wolfcreek Wilderness School, First Ascent, Regis University and Outward Bound West. She also assisted the Yosemite and Tuolumne search and rescue teams for two seasons. Mary lives in Boulder, Colorado where she is the sole proprietor of “Conscious Bodywork” and a writer for “Foxfire Studios”.


Gordy Kito
A close friend to Ritt Kellogg, Gordy Kito is a Colorado College graduate, founding member of the Ritt Kellogg Fund and the incoming (2004-2005) Ritt Kellogg Fund Advisory Committee President. As a climbing ranger in Denali National Park, Gordy is intimately familiar with the risks and rigors of high altitude, alpine expedition climbing. Gordy brings to the Advisory Committee extensive knowledge of expedition safety protocols, wilderness medical practices and leave no trace backcountry ethics. His experience in the National Park Service provides the Advisory Committee with a strong basis for non-profit management and governance. Gordy lives in Talkeetna, Alaska with his wife Julie Anne.


Seth Miller
Seth Miller has been a Ritt Kellogg Fund Advisory Committee member since its inception in 1993. Seth has over 10 years of experience in the field of non-profit management and youth development. He was co-founder of the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps in Taos, New Mexico. Seth has climbed and skied in Argentina, Mexico, Alaska, and throughout the American west. He currently lives in San Francisco where he works as the Director of Policy for the California Center for Regional Leadership. Seth holds a Masters in Business Administration from Boston University.


Kishen Mangat
Kishen Mangat is a two-time Ritt Kellogg Fund grant recipient, a 1996 Colorado College Graduate and a Ritt Kellogg Fund Advisory Committee Member since 1998. He has founded several technology companies and is currently Vice-President and co-founder of BroadHop, Inc., a network management software company based in Denver, Colorado. Kishen’s love for alpine and big wall climbing has taken him to Alaska, Africa, Yosemite, and throughout the mountain west. Kishen has also served as an Outward Bound mountaineering instructor in the California Sierra Mountains. He lives in Denver with his wife and son.


David Barnett
David Barnett is a two-time Ritt Kellogg Fund recipient, a 1996 Colorado College Graduate and a Ritt Kellogg Fund Advisory Committee member since 1998. During the inaugural grant season in 1995, David ascended Mt. Sliverthrone in the Alaska Range. In 1996, his second grant allowed him to ascend the Sultana Ridge of Mt. Foraker also in the Alaska Range. David has more than fifteen years of rock and alpine climbing experience and his record of accomplishment includes adventures in Yosemite, the Bugaboos, the Tetons, the North Cascades, Rocky Mountain National Park the Black Canyon and Canyonlands. David has extensive experience as an outdoor educator, from which he has gained a keen understanding of wilderness safety and environmental ethics. He is currently a fellow of the Natural Resource Ecology Lab based in Fort Collins, Colorado, where his invasive species research work keeps him close to the public and private grant funding process, which is an asset he brings to the Ritt Kellogg Fund Advisory Committee. David lives in Jackson, Wyoming with his wife, Geneva Chong.


Jason Hall
Jason Hall is a Ritt Kellogg Fund grant recipient, a 1998 Colorado College graduate, and a member of the Ritt Kellogg Fund Advisory Committee since 2002. Jason’s passion for alpine mountaineering was born in the northern Cascades out of a love for skiing and climbing. This appreciation for time in the mountains has been shared with others through alpine, telemark, and adaptive ski instruction throughout the US. It has been the inspiration for adventures in the Alps and mountains of Alaska and the western US. Jason works as a hydrogeologist throughout the southwest. He lives with his wife, Sharada, and their two boys, Cobin and Haven, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.


Steve Crosby
Steve Crosby is the Outdoor Education Coordinator of Campus Activities at Colorado College. Steve plays a key role as the primary liaison between the College and the Ritt Kellogg Fund Advisory Committee. Steve came to CC after 2.5 years at the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he advised the Adventure Learning Programs, Undergrad (BA) in English from the University of New Hampshire, M.Ed. (Hons) in Adult and Higher Education from the University of Auckland, NZ.  Graduate research topics:  Excellence in Outdoor Leadership Development in Higher Education,  Meta-analysis on factors that influence learning, and the influence of NZ gov't policy on the outdoor education profession (article published in the Australian Journal of Outdoor Education),  6 years with Colorado Outward Bound School '90-'96, 5 years as an adjunct faculty of Wilderness Studies at Colorado Mountain College '93-'98, Program Director at the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (as well as intern - '88, and adaptive ski instructor and adaptive race coach '89-'97), 5 years as a Hutmaster with Summit Huts Association, 1 season as a guide on Mt. Rainier, former ski racer and ski coach with Team Breckenridge (now Quantum Sports) '92-'96.


Dorothy Phillips
Dorothy Phillips served as Coordinator of Campus Activities at Colorado College for fourteen years. She was deeply involved with the students in the Outdoor Recreation Committee as well as the ORC Leadership Training Program. She promoted the the Ritt Kellogg Fund to all students and encouraged and helped many applicants to become recipients of grants. Dorothy has been a Ritt Kellogg Fund Advisory Committee Member since 1998. She lives in Woodland Park, CO.


Kirk Kellogg
Kirk Kellogg is Ritt Kellogg’s brother and a founder of the Ritt Kellogg Fund. He is Senior Managing Partner of the Performance Group, a Wall Street specialist trading firm.


Lee Kellogg
Lee Kellogg is Ritt Kellogg’s sister and a founder of the Ritt Kellogg Fund.


Bo Parsons
Bo grew up outside of Chicago, Illinois, and began his love for the outdoors amidst family-owned cabins in Estes Park, Colorado. He is a 1991graduate of The Lawrenceville School, and a 1995 graduate of the Colorado College. He began climbing in his spring term of his first year at Colorado College and eventually became an inaugural grant recipient in 1995 for a trip to climb the Devil’s Thumb in southeastern Alaska. Bo became a member of the Ritt Kellogg Memorial Fund Advisory Committee in 2003.

Along with technical climbing, Bosier enjoys hockey, fly-fishing, and skiing. He was a competitive mogul skier during college, skiing in the Rocky Mountain Freestyle division, where he had several top 10 finishes. He also has a love for ski mountaineering, and has successfully skied all 3 “W” Couloirs in Devil’s Playground, the East and West Branches of the “Y” Couloir, the Railroad Couloir, and the East Face of Pikes Peak, all multiple times. Bosier has also skied the South Couloir on Quandary Peak, the South Couloir on Kitt Carson, and several other couloirs along the Front Range and in the Mount Sneffells areas. 

Bosier’s climbing achievements include over 25 different routes in the alpine cirques of Pikes Peak and successful routes on all major formations in Rocky Mountain National Park including Mt. Meeker, Longs Peak, Mt. Alice, Chiefshead, Spearhead, Arrowhead, Petit Grepon, The Saber, The Foil, Hallett’s Peak, Notchtop, and Lumpy Ridge. He has also climbed Longs Peak in the winter, via the Trough Couloir, and has climbed the Diamond over 10 times, via 7 different routes.  Bosier has also enjoyed climbing trips to the Wind River Range, the Grand Teton, North Cascades, Elephant’s Perch, Yosemite Valley, Red Rocks, Zion National Park, Canyonlands, and the Black Canyon. 

Bo currently sells Pella Windows and Doors, and lives in Colorado Springs with his wife Kari, and daughter Mia Rose. Bo is glad to be of local assistance to students applying to the Ritt Kellogg Memorial Fund, and would always enjoy a day out climbing at Garden of the Gods or Turkey Rocks, or on Pikes Peak.
