Ritt Kellogg Memorial Fund programs are focused on facilitating responsible and creative wilderness expeditions. The RKMF Advisory Committee has developed several programs to support the expedition focus through education and training.

Expeditions

Once annually, current students may present proposals for wilderness expeditions to take place in the US and Canada. Students should view this as a chance to undertake a responsible and rewarding challenge that is thoughtful and inspiring.

Refer to the Criteria section of this site to learn more about expeditions requirements.

Education

The Ritt Kellogg Fund provides education grants and on-campus seminars to support responsible and rewarding expeditions. Courses and seminars are designed to assist the student in preparing for future Ritt Kellogg Expeditions. Professional development activities such as instructor training courses are not eligible for funding.

TThe Alaska Mountaineering School, NOLS and Outward Bound among others provide outdoor education courses. On-campus seminars sponsored by the Ritt Kellogg Fund include rock climbing anchors and protection, vertical rescue and swift water rescue. These courses are available periodically and course offerings are subject to change. Students interested in courses offered by outside organizations are encouraged to independently review and assess the quality and nature of these programs for themselves.

Wilderness First Responder

WFR certification is required for all Ritt Kellogg grant applicants and certification must be current at the time of expedition.

The WFR is designed specifically for outdoor professionals and is recognized as an important certification to obtain for those leading and teaching in the outdoor industry. This course provides the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations. Half of the course time is spent completing practical skills designed to challenge decision-making abilities, while the other half focuses on classroom learning. Although the RKMF has sponsored a WFR course in the past, there will not be a sponsored WFR course for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Expedition Training Courses

The Ritt Kellogg Fund sponsors technical courses to make expeditions more responsible in wilderness settings. Students on these courses will learn skills critical to responsible travel in technical mountain environments such as gear selection, route finding, and anchor craft. Instruction will also focus on self-rescue: the systems and tools required to extricate a team from a high-angle emergency situation. These courses present a unique and invaluable opportunity for Colorado College students to acquire skills important to a successful Ritt Kellogg Fund application and expedition.

Expedition training courses and dates for 2007-2008:

Subsidized courses are offered to Ritt Kellogg grant applicants with funds that remain after expedition grants are awarded. Each year the frequency and types of training courses varies.  Currently there are no courses scheduled for Fall, 2007. As courses are offered they will be posted on this website and with the Director of Outdoor Education, Steve Crosby.

Feel free to contact Steve at 719-227-8131, or steve.crosby@coloradocollege.edu for more information and details.

Book Collection

Each year, the Ritt Kellogg Fund purchases and donates books to Colorado College's Tutt Library. These books are intended to provide students with references on topics related to wilderness expeditions and education. Our collection features publications on a variety of topics including outdoor instruction and technique, guidebooks, history, narratives and wilderness spirit.

Ritt Kellogg Climbing Wall

Colorado College is privileged to have the on-campus, newly designed Ritt Kellogg Climbing Wall inside the El Pomar Sports Center. This valuable student resource was made possible through a generous donation from the Kellogg Family and through the cooperation of the Outdoor Recreation Committee. Ritt grant applicants and recipients are encouraged to utilize this resource as means for training and preparation for their expeditions.
